Note:
The original identification as Xylodon radula (=Basidioradulum radula) is presumably a slip for Hyphodontia radula (=Xylodon raduloides/Schizopora radula). Wang et al 2021 synonimised Schizopora radula (including the replacement name X. raduloides), Xylodon laurentianus (2019), X. patagonicus (2019), X. novozelandicus (2019) with X. subtropicalis (2017). Schizopora radula (1800) is blocked in Xylodon because of X. radula (Fr.) 1818 (an unrelated taxon, Basioradulum radula). The replacement name X. raduloides was established in 2017 (18th April). X. subtropicus is based on Hyphodontia subtropicus, also 2017 (20th March). If X. subtropicus and S. radula are accepted as synonyms then the correct name in Xylodon is X. subtropicus. However, phylogenetically, X. subtropicus is not sufficiently similar with only a 97% similarity (20-30bp difference on ITS) to sequences of the remaining species. Thus, in my opinion X. subtropicus should be accepted as a separate species. The remaining species do show well supported phylogenetic differences; however, they are all within 98.7% (10bp) similarity. In my opinion they are regional variants of a single morphologically identical species (small differences in spores/basidia are probably not reliable) and all are probably all inter-fertile. An infra-specific rank of subspecies/variety would have been appropriate to separate them and it is not necessary or taxonomically useful to recognise them at species level.
